lower_cavity (l_c) is an artist-run residency and project space located in Holyoke, a former mill town in western Massachusetts that at one time produced most of the paper made in the US. Hosting artists and curators four to six times a year, l_c provides a 500 sq. ft studio apartment and a raw, 3200 sq. ft industrial space in which to work. The goal of l_c is to provide artists with access to a unique, expansive environment in which to experiment and develop ideas, without the expectations of resolved outcomes.

Residents are hosted for two to four weeks and are encouraged (though not required) to develop projects in response to the space. While l_c is conceived primarily as a working lab for the development of artists’ practice and not as an exhibition program, projects are documented and preserved online, and are open to visitors by appointment. Residents are also given access to the l_c social media account for the duration of their project, which can be used to further document or contextualize their activities during their stay.

(Please note that residencies at lower_cavity are by invitation only; we do not accept unsolicited proposals.)
